Perched above one of Toronto’s iconic natural ravines, this 1924 Edwardian home renovation and addition is a thoughtful reimagining of a historic residence—balancing architectural heritage with contemporary design. The project explores the intersection of historic preservation, modern residential architecture, and landscape-driven design, creating a home that feels both timeless and distinctly modern.

Set within one of Toronto’s most coveted ravine settings, the design responds equally to the character of the original house and the extraordinary natural landscape beyond. The goal was to preserve the home’s Edwardian architectural charm while carefully introducing modern interventions that elevate the way the home functions for contemporary family living.

Original proportions, detailing, and key heritage elements are being thoughtfully retained and restored, maintaining the historic identity of the residence and its relationship to the surrounding neighbourhood. Against this preserved architectural framework, new interventions introduce light, openness, and stronger connections to the ravine landscape.

At the heart of this ravine home, a sculptural custom staircase crafted from steel and wood becomes a defining architectural feature. Positioned directly beneath a large skylight, the stair acts as both circulation and centrepiece—drawing natural light deep into the home and creating a bright, airy vertical connection between levels. More than a functional element, the staircase becomes a spatial anchor, shaping movement, light, and visual continuity throughout the interior.

The rear of the home opens dramatically toward the ravine through an expansive modern home addition designed to maximize views, daylight, and connection to nature. Large floor-to-ceiling windows frame sweeping views of the wooded landscape, allowing the changing seasons to become an integral part of the daily living experience.

Clad in a sophisticated palette of natural wood and metal siding, the addition presents a contemporary architectural language that complements the historic home without competing with it. Vertical corten steel fins punctuate the façade, acting as sculptural sun-shading devices that modulate light, provide privacy, and create dynamic shadow play throughout the day.

Below, a generous sunken patio extends the living space outdoors, offering a flexible setting for quiet retreat, intimate gatherings, or large family entertaining. Accessible through expansive sliding glass doors, the patio creates a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces, reinforcing the relationship between architecture and landscape.

This Toronto ravine house renovation ultimately transforms a historic Edwardian home into a sophisticated contemporary residence—one that honours its past while embracing modern living. Through carefully balanced preservation, thoughtful additions, and strong connections to the surrounding ravine, the project creates a home deeply rooted in both architectural history and natural context.
