All the Joy I See Through These Architects’ Eyes

The Design Philosophy of These Architects

Gina Schafrick and Colin Grant, co-founders of the architectural firm These Architects, share a laugh.

All the majesty of a city landscape

All the soaring days in our lives

All the concrete dreams in my mind's eye

All the joy i see through these architects’ eyes

~David Bowie

These Architects draws its name and ethos from a line in David Bowie’s 1995 song “Thru’ These Architects Eyes”—a lyric that captures a way of seeing the world not as it is, but as it could be. That perspective defines the practice: an architecture shaped by imagination, grounded in craft, and attuned to the lived experience of those who inhabit it.

Founded on the belief that buildings should do more than serve function, These Architects approaches each project as an opportunity to elevate the everyday. Their work moves fluidly between art and architecture, where light, material, and form are composed with intention and restraint. Whether residential or commercial, each project is guided by a sensitivity to context and a commitment to clarity—spaces that feel both considered and inevitable.

Fundamental to the the studio’s philosophy is a collaborative process. Clients are invited into the act of making, where ideas are tested, refined, and realised through dialogue and trust. From early concept through construction, These Architects balances creative vision with technical rigour, ensuring that design integrity is carried through every phase.

In a time when the built environment is often driven by speed and repetition, These Architects stands apart—crafting architecture that is quietly expressive, deeply human, and enduring in its impact. Through their lens, architecture becomes more than shelter; it becomes a way of seeing, a way of feeling, and ultimately, a way of living.

Crafting architecture that is quietly expressive, deeply human, and enduring in its impact.

At the core of These Architects is a shared belief, shaped by its co-founders Gina Schafrick and Colin Grant, that architecture should move beyond utility to become an expressive, human-centred experience—one that quietly balances art, craft, and purpose.

Gina’s background in both fine art and architecture informs a design approach rooted in precision, composition, and sensitivity to detail. Her work is inherently collaborative, bringing together clients, consultants, and builders into a cohesive process that transforms complex constraints into refined, livable outcomes. With a strong focus on residential design, she approaches each project as an opportunity to choreograph space, light, and material into something both intimate and enduring.

Colin complements this with a narrative-driven sensibility. Shaped by international experience across retail and hospitality environments, he approaches architecture as storytelling—each project an opportunity to “make a space sing its story.” His strength lies in drawing out the emotional and experiential qualities of a space, ensuring that design decisions resonate beyond aesthetics. Deeply collaborative by nature, he fosters integrated teams that elevate both the process and the final outcome, aligning design ambition with clarity of execution.

Every architectural detail contributes to a cohesive whole, adding to the poetic narrative of spaces they create.

Together, Gina and Colin operate less from a fixed stylistic signature and more from a shared methodology. Their design philosophy begins with listening—understanding the rhythms of their clients’ lives, the character of a site, and the intangible qualities of light and material. From this foundation, they develop architecture as a seamless integration of building and interior, where every detail contributes to a cohesive whole.

Their work is defined by restraint and intentionality: spaces are carefully edited rather than over-designed, allowing context, landscape, and lived experience to take precedence. Whether reconnecting a home to its surrounding forest or reshaping an urban dwelling to better support family life, their projects consistently seek a deeper alignment between people and place.

In this way, their practice reflects a quiet but rigorous philosophy—architecture as a lyrical framework for living, where thoughtful planning, material clarity, and human experience converge to create spaces that feel both grounded and poetic.

These Architects see architecture as a seamless integration of building and interior, where every detail contributes to a cohesive whole.
